Rock Climbing

Our neighbors the Dennis' invited us to go rock climbing one weekend.  They have a little girl about Aspen's age, a Little boy that is about 2, and a new baby.  So we decided to go with them.  We went to a rock cliff up Big Cottonwood Canyon.  It is a popular climbing spot, so we had to wait a while for a spot to open up.  While we waited the kids climbed a few feet up on a small wall nearby.

Sophie was one of the first ones to climb.  She climbed really well up to a ledge about 10-12 feet off the ground.  Then she turned and looked back at us and saw how high she climbed and freaked out and wanted to come back down.

Then Aspen had a chance to climb.  She did great as well and made it to the same ledge that Sophie did.  I wondered if they would have a hard time coming down because they basically just had to let go and trust the rope would hold them.  But they didn't seem to care at all.  That kind of instant trust must go away as you get older.

Sophie then had another turn to climb.  Isaac told her that if she made it all the way to the top he would hike up there and give her a high-five.  So she started climbing, and climbing, and climbing.  Isaac and I just kept looking at her and saying "there's no way she's going to make it all the way".  But she kept getting closer and closer until Isaac realized he needed to hike up and high-five her.  We were so blown away with her abilities.  She must have climbed at least 80 feet all the way to the top on her second time!

Then it was my turn.  And the wall was fairly hard.  The whole time I kept thinking that I had to make it all the way up because Sophie did it.  And there were a bunch of times the hand and footholds were so far apart I wondered what Sophie even held onto while she climbed.  The higher I got, the more impressed I was that Sophie made it all the way.  I did make it all the way up.

Then Isaac had a turn.  He made it to the top as well.  But when he got down one of the first things he said was "how in the world did Sophie make it all the way up there?".  He was thinking the exact same things I was as he climbed.

We were really shocked at how well the kids did.  We thought they would be too young to be able to rock climb, but they did great and it was a fun outdoor activity to do as a family.
