Aspen's 7th Birthday

In July Aspen turned 7 years old!  I had been asking her for weeks about what kind of party she wanted to have.  I suggested a "chocolate party" because her eyes are such a dark chocolatey brown.  I said we could fill water balloons with melted chocolate and have a balloon fight, dip our faces in melted chocolate to make a mold of ourselves, and have a chocolate fountain.  She liked the water balloon and fountain idea.  Unfortunately I was joking and she had to pick something else.  Eventually she decided she wanted to have a "Fairy Party".

So I got to work planning the party and making decorations.  I made some fairy jars, a sign, and little fairy terrariums.  Aspen wanted to paint fairy houses and have a tea party lunch in the fairy forest.

Isaac and I worked hard to finish the shop cabinets in time for Aspen's party.  The shop was amazing for a party like this.  I didn't have to worry about kids getting paint all over my house.  And with COVID-19, it was nice to have the party semi outside.

I bought tons of different bird houses at Micheal's.  Each girl got to choose a house and paint and decorate it.  Fortunately Lacey brought her kids down for the party and she was such a huge help.

Then I had decorated the forest behind our house for a picnic.  I saw some truly incredible ideas on Pinterest that I would have loved to do, but Isaac refused to haul a bunch of tables and log stumps (for chairs) out to the forest.  Bummer.  (Although I didn't have any log stumps.)  But I borrowed some cute tea cups from my mom, and each girl got a pair of fairy wings, a flower crown, and a butterfly or leaf necklace.

I thought the party turned out really fun.

We also had the grandparents over for cake and ice cream.  We tried to keep the party outside as much as possible because Grandma Sugar is high risk during this pandemic.  And Grandpa Barry was still recovering from his broken ribs from his bike accident.

Isaac and I gave Aspen some great presents this year.  She really wanted a pair of flippers and snorkel like Sophie's.  And she got a cotton candy machine that has been fun to use with the neighbor kids (again the shop has been amazing for making that kind of treat).  And I wanted to give Aspen an hoverboard.  Isaac wasn't convinced this was a good idea, but went along with it.  It was really interesting to watch her learn to use it.  The first few times, she was so unstable and nervous.  Now she can hop on that thing and zip around without any problems.  She makes it look so easy.

Aspen had a great time on her birthday, and I hope she knows how much we love her.

Here are some things about Aspen recently:

  • Aspen is a great reader, but doesn't have much confidence.  She fights me on reading so much and says she doesn't like reading, but I think she is just self-conscious.
  • Aspen is really good at math, but again says she doesn't like it.  But she smiles so big when I tell her how good she is at adding and subtracting.
  • Aspen is currently our easiest kid.  She takes care of herself fairly well, she does what she's asked or knows what to do without being told, she cleans up after herself the most, she is the best helper with Hazel, and she doesn't whine and cry very much.
  • She loves to play with her friends and is outside hours each day playing with all the little girls on the street.
  • Aspen's personality is the most like mine.  We sleep the same way (on our sides), like the same foods (chocolate over fruity things), and she says the funniest things to Isaac (and usually I am thinking the same thing), she's very observant and detail oriented (and picky), and is efficient.  It is interesting because Sophie sleeps and eats like Isaac.  Genetics are weird.
  • She still loves looking cute and doing her hair nicely, but she really isn't girly.  She is a tough little thing and super strong.  But she still can be a spitfire and is funny and spunky.
We love Aspen so much.  That little firecracker baby who gave me a run for my money every day is turning into such an amazing little girl.
