Re-finishing Project

Ever since we moved to Milwaukee I have been really interested in cheaply re-finishing items/furniture around our house. Last fall I painted two lamps, a bulletin board, and a bookshelf. The pictures show the first lamp I re-finished.

Isaac bought this lamp at the DI before we got married. We had it in our Village apartment for 3 years before moving here, and I hated this lamp. I thought it was hideous. It had an ugly brass/gold base, and the lampshade was crumpled accordion. I tried to throw this lamp away for years, but Isaac wouldn't let me.

After we moved, I decided to give Isaac's lamp a make-over. I bought a can of spray paint for $1 and a lampshade on clearance for $1.70 (this shade is a little bold for my regular style, but I went a little wild). Now I love the lamp. Not a bad transformation for less than $3.

This weekend, the weather was nice and I started some of my re-finishing projects again. We have two ceiling fans that are brass/gold with ugly glass fixtures. (See picture below.)

I wanted to buy new glass covers and spray paint the gold parts silver. Finding the spray paint was the hardest part. I wanted something that looked like brushed nickel metal. The only paints I could find looked like paint, not metal (like a car paint instead of a real metal finish). I found some chrome paint that was too shiny. Eventually I found a paint that was called "brushed nickel" so I decided to give it a try. The finished product is shown below. The paint is still not perfect, but it is a million times better than before. I also found the glass covers at Walmart for a good price. Not a bad transformation for about $10.

I am also about half-way through re-finishing our patio furniture. I am spray painting all the metal parts with a speckle-y brown paint. This looks really good because it makes all the little rust spots blend in with the paint. I am also going to attempt to sew a new umbrella for the set (you wouldn't believe how expensive patio umbrellas are). I will post those pictures when the project is finished.

Look at you little miss crafty. Love the new projects! I have a few that you can do around my house like the clean-up after a flood!

The fans look great (and I've always loved the lamp!) Good luck with that unbrella...I still think you're brave to attempt it :) You inspire me...if you can do it, maybe I can too!

WOW, Marcy. I love both of those. I need your help around my house. I have tones of stuff that needs to be done, I just don't have the imagination for that kind of stuff
