Bluffdale Old West Days

Every summer Bluffdale has Old West days where they have different free activities for a week or so.  We don't go to a lot of them, but this year we went to three.

First we went to the rodeo.  It's not a PRCA rodeo, so the cowboys aren't the greatest.  But the show is only 5 minutes up the road and you don't need to buy tickets in advance.  We talked about going, but I was worried about sitting out in the heat while I'm so pregnant.  But the evening of the rodeo a cold front came through and dropped the temperature to about 75 degrees, so we decided to go.  On the way there it started raining.  We thought the storm would blow over quickly, but it ended up raining on us almost the entire rodeo.  Thankfully I brought jackets, a blanket, and an umbrella for me at the kids.  Jamie and Steve were there too and they were freezing.

Then we went to the bubble foam pit activity.  This one is always a hit with the kids.  They blow bubbles all over the grass at a park and the kids run through it.  I honestly don't know how the kids can breathe in there and am amazed they don't find a bunch that have asphyxiated after the bubbles clear.  This year I brought a lawn chair and plopped down a good ways back from the bubbles, and after 30 minutes my throat was burning from breathing the chemicals of those bubbles.  But the kids love it.  It always takes the little ones, like Luke, a while to get up the courage to go in there, but then they have fun.  And now we know all our neighbors better, so we met up with a bunch of them at the park.

Finally we went to the Monster Truck show.  One of our neighbors kept raving about how amazing it was last year.  So we decided to go since we knew Luke would love it.  The show started with a few tricks from the monster trucks.  Those were really cool.  But then it went into races with beat up pick up trucks and ATVs.  That was ok for a while, but it just kept going.  Then they had a little intermission where a guy came out to blow fire.  A trashy looking guy in a wife-beater tank top came out carrying a flaming wand and rag.  His buddy followed him around carrying a gallon of some sort of alcohol or flammable liquid. The guy would take a big drink of his liquid, wipe his face off, and then blow flames.  Luke thought it was AMAZING.  He turned to me and said, "I want to do that when I grow up."  Um No.  That's the first time he's ever shown interest in a career path, and that's what he wants to pursue?  I don't think so.  I said, "No you don't."  He asked why and I said, "Cause that guy is stupid."  He asked why and I said, "Because he's going to burn his face off someday."  So I explained how he can think it's cool to watch and enjoy, but he is never going to try it himself.  And Luke kept saying, "But he's a dragon."  Boys.  Then after the fire show we had to watch more pick-up and ATV races.  By that time I had had enough and was tempted to leave, but we stuck it out.  Which was good because they finally brought out the Monster Trucks.  Those were really cool (and loud).  They did some cool tricks and things like crushing cars, but it was just fun to see such big trucks.  We had fun, but I don't know if it's worth going back every year.
