Camping Trip

This weekend Isaac and I went camping with a few of our Milwaukee friends. We went out to the Kettle Moraine State Park. We left after work on Friday and drove a little over an hour to get to the park. The drive out there was one of the nicest we have had. We passed through a few little farming communities with wide open fields and barns. We even saw our first Wisconsin cows. (Isaac and I joke about how we had never seen cows here. The Wisconsin license plates say "America's Dairyland", but we never saw any proof of that.) The picture below shows the gang that went camping.

Our friends reserved a very nice group campsite. There was plenty of room for all of us, and we weren't crammed next to other campers. Below is a picture of some of our tents.

The Kagie's were our group leaders, and they did an awesome job! They planned a delicious Dutch oven meal for dinner that night. We had roasted herb red potatoes, chicken enchiladas, and apple cobbler. Yummy! (I was joking with Necia that because they did such a great job, that Scott was born to be a scout master. Little did I know that at church the following day Necia would be the one called to be the young women camp director.)

The next morning we went for a hike at the John Muir trail. There were tons of people biking on the trail, but not many people were out hiking. We meant to go for a 1 mile hike, but we got lost and ended up hiking around 4 miles. We were impressed with this area because it was the largest hiking area we have discovered in Wisconsin. The area was really pretty, but it was weird hiking around without an actual destination because it kind-of felt like we were wandering around in circles. There were tons of trees along the trail, but when you walking in the proper direction you could see that they were perfectly lined up in rows. Isaac said that we were hiking through the "Artificial Forest" because it was obvious that a lot of the vegetation was planted, and not naturally growing.

After that, we went to lunch in a small town before heading to a small pond for some fishing. It was fun to have a chance to try to catch a fish. The Robert's were very kind for letting us use all their fishing equipment. The pond was had really clear water, so we could see tons of fish swimming around. It looked like the fish were planted there, so we thought we would catch lots of fish. But we didn't get any bites. Normally fishing isn't as frustrating because you can't see the fish regecting you so obviously. But this was just insulting. Actually, we had a lot of fun fishing, and we would definately be interested in going again. Unfortunately I did not take pictures at the lake. It was starting to rain, so I didn't bring the camera along. But the lake really was incredibly beautiful. Hopefully we can go back again so I can get some pictures. All in all we had a great weekend, and we are hoping to have a lot more like it this summer.

How fun! Wish we could have been there. Next time for sure! The forest is funny. Maybe it was planted for harvesting (or after harvesting)?
